Calisthenics technical regulations:
Competition coreography:
Each athlete in the elimination tournament 1 vs 1 must prepare coreographies (set) in number and duration variable according to the requirements provided by the judges or by Burningate®, before each competition. The nature of the contents of these sets is completely left to the participant’s imagination, there is neither a limit number of compulsory skills, nor the need to perform skills according to different abilities together (freestyle, static, dynamic). Impartial and absolute jury made up of 3 or 5 judges depending on the competition, who will evaluate the elements performed during the sets according to the following modalities:
The execution faults will be identified and classified as follows:
small error: slight deviation from the proper execution, -0.10 0.30
Medium error: significant deviation from the proper execution -0.30. 0.5
Big error: deviation from the proper execution or lacking of minimum holding time, or not achieving the skill or fall: from 1 to cancelation of the element.
Combinations and orginality/connections bonus: the connected elements below will lead a score bonus according to the number of combinations and the complexity of the conncetion from 0,1 to 0,5. An additional originality bouns may be conferred to the completely innovative elements from 0,1 to 0,5 points. This bonus 0,1-0,5 only applies to the connections; the skills achieved with the same, only count as links in a row and have a basic bonus of 0.1.
Example: an athlete performs a front lever; he goes up with gymnastic ascent (vertical ascent) and he hangs at the bar in Straddle Planche. Here he brings both legs above the bar (up to be seated) and he falls backwards blocking a Back Lever; he moves to an one-arm Back Lever and then he goes down. descends. He will take the basic scores of the single skills if performed perfectly (front, planche, back lever e oabl) and in addition 0,4 bonus for connecting 4 skills, + 0,6 for using two conncetions with a difficulty respectively of 0,1 and 0,5 (gymnastic ascent and freestyle connection “over the bar “ explained below.
Freestyle parameters: in the freestyle skills performance, in addition to all the parameters below, will be judged the performance’s fluidity, the non-interrumption of the combinations and originality of the movements.
Repettion faults: repeating the same element during the same set will lead to a penalty of gradual increase depending on the number of repetitions, from a minumum of 0,10+ .
Each judge will assess the gravity in errors on his own. Errors noticed by the single judge will be unquestionable; in order to determine the actual seriouseness, it may not be a discrepancy among the judges higher than 0,5 for errors noticed by several judges. In that case, the majority of the jury will be decisive.
Errors measurements:
Each element will be rated according to the final position achieved compared to the proper one (static) or to the proper requested performance (dynamic e freestyle).
Errors such as angular inclinations, bent limbs and so on, will be classified in the categories of small-medium-big error and the related score will be deducted. One skill may present different types of errors, combined with each other, until the full cancellation of the skill (e.g. If a skill starts from 1 point and two medium errors are made, all the score may be lost).
Scores code
The following code was drawn up by the Burningate® experts.
The code is designed to assure an objective and uniform evaluation of the calisthenics exercises (skills), and to allow to determine the best athlete in a competiotn, to guide the athletes in the settlment of the exercises, to constantly update the skills of this discipline.
Regulations concerning tthe difficulty of the exercises:
A specific value in decimal points is assigned to each skill, in a similar way to the artistic gymnastic. Elements of particular relevance not listed in the code, must be exposed to the judges in advance before the performance; otherwise it will be evaluated by comparing to its closest element in the tables.
Scores have been assested according to the following criteria:
For the element is included in the code of the artistic gymnastics both on the ground and at the rings, it has been taken account the value and the different scores; obviously they are often different for inherent diversity between the two sports (for example a handstand at the rings the in gymnastics is not pratically evaluated because it is a gymnast routine’s element, having different exercise habits, the decision was to evaluate it by attributing a specific score).
For the skills typical of the discipline, it has been considered; the general difficulty, the expected learning time and the repeatability of the elements to try to balance the set.
Static:
Unless otherwise specified, the same exercise will have a different score if performed by using the following items, in order of difficulty and then of evaluation: parallel bars, on the ground, bars, rings.
All the scores refer to the perfect performance of the single element.
Any coreography added to the achievement of the static skill (walks) will lead to a bonus from 0,1 to 0,2 points if the static skill will be held for the expected minimum time.
Time: first parameter for each static. A static skill to be considered valid must be held for at least 2,5 seconds.
Elements:
Planche: the following scores refer to the perfect executive performance of the single element.
Parallel bars | Ground | Bar | rings
stradlle | 0,5 | 1 | 1,2 | 2 |
planche full | 1,5 | 2 | 2,2 | 3 |
rondine/maltese (nb under) | 2,5 | 3 | 3,5 | 4 |
one arm | 3,5/4 | |||
variants | bonus 0,5 | |||
Supine grip | bonus 0,2 | |||
push | bonus 0,2 | Bonus 0,3 | Bonus 0,4 | Bonus 0,5 |
N.b. With the term variants, we refer to a positioning of the limbs different to the canonical one; performing the movement with crossed arms, overlapped palms, on your fingers, one hand on the floor and the other on a support, etc., they all count as variants. In order to give a bonus, the push version must maintain all the technical requirements of the same, and reach at least the supporting plane of the hands. Loss of line, not reaching the plane, etc. will be combined together until the annulment of the push version. A push version beyond the supporting plane, with effective ascent (possible only at the parallel bars or rings), will include an additional bonus of 0,5 at the parallels (for a total amount of 0,7) and of 3 at the rings (for a total of 3,5). If the maltese/swallow is performed in the straddle variant, its scores would be lowered to: 1,5 2 2,5 3.
Front and variants:
front lever | f.l. closed | vic. assisted | f.l.1 arm | victorian
1 | 3 | 3,5 | 4 | 5 | |
variants | 0,1-0,5 | ||||
pulls | 0,5 |
N.b. The term variants refers to a different grip than the canonical one; hands closed, crossed, on the fingers, overlapped, etc. are considered variants bonus. F1 closed refers to to the isometric hold of the same, with pelvis attached to the bar. Pull variants will be considered valid if performed full rom, otherwise it will be considered as pull ½ with bonus score of 0,2.
Human flag:
human flag | Raises /raise full flag | pull | entrance | Full round | Pull-ups up and down | Mu/flag |
0,8 | 0,3/0,5 | 0,6 | 0,2 | 1,5 | 0,7 | 3 |
N.b: with raises, it is meant all those movements which bring the athlete from the human flag up to a vertical position (concentric), to which a bonus of 0,3 will be assigned. The opposite eccentric movements will not include any bonus. The pulls will provide a bonus of 0,5 each, to be performed perfectly. A dynamic entrance (jump and hanging on the fly or then swinging) will provide an additional 0,2 bonus. With full round (possible only at the pole) it is meant that the athlete after a raise descends on the opposite side and hold the isometry for the minimum time. Up and down pull-ups may be performed with the body perpendicular to the element of the grip.
Back lever:
Back lever | one arm | pulls | variants |
0,5 | 1 | 0,4 | 0,3+ |
N.b: pulls will provide bonus only if technically perfect; the variants, like wide grip, overlapped, etc. will provide a 0,3 bonus if judged worthy.
Handstand:
Parallel bars | ground | Prone grip bar | Supine grip bar | Longitudinal grip | Rings | flag
0,1 | 0,2 | 1 | 1,5 | 2 | 1,5 | 2,5 | |
one arm | 0,5 | 0,7 | 1,5 | ||||
push 1/2rom | 0,1 | 0,1 | 1,5 | 1,5
push full (reverse muscle up) | 1,5 | 3,5 |
N.b:. Push half rom rifers to the standard hspu; full rom refers to starting from the candle on the rings and discending beyond the plane passing through the parallel bars on the latter; bonus will be applied only if the body will constantly be held, exessive inclinations would provide malus until the cancellation of the same.
Press to handstand.
Parallel bars | ground | bar | rings | Longitudinal
straddle | 0,7 | 1,3 | 1,8 | 2,3 | 2 |
full | 1,2 | 2,5 | 2,7 | 3,3 | 3 |
swallow | 3 | 3,5 | 4 | 5 |
N.b. The press, to be strictly intended with straight arms, will bring the abovementioned bonus; bending the arms or altering the attitude of the body will provide malus to the bonus from a minimum of 0,1 until the cancellation.
L sit and variants:
Parallel bars | ground | rings
l sit | 0,2 | 0,3 | 1 |
v sit | 0,5 | 0,7 | 1,5 |
manna | 3 |
N.b. The score for the L-sit at the rings is the same as in gymnastic. For the manna only performance on the ground is expected.
DYNAMICS:
As for the static ones, the following scores of the dynamic refer to the perfect executive techinque.
Muscle up and variants:
mu base | mu clean -explosive | mu slow | mu 1/2 ted | Hefesto german han muscle up | Entrada /back lever muscle up | mu ted | oamu
0,2 | 0,5 | 0,4 | 1,5 | 2,5 | 2/3 | 4 | 4,5
variants | 0,2+ | 0,4+ | 0,6+ |
N.b: With Muscle-up clean (explosive) is meant that the movement do not have to be slit into two parts, but a fluid explosive pull-up. The second row indicates the scores bonus attributable in case of variants (varying the width of the grip, cross grip, supine grip) which will provide a larger bonus according to the muscle up variants. The base refers to the muscle up not perfect but always with the body in line, in which the movement is divided in one part of pulling and one of pushing. Errors like or similar will invalidate the bonus. The “hefesto” variant will be considered valid only if the body arrives over the bar and the arms straight, otherwise the basic scorse will be lowered to 1. with the Mu half ted, is meant the discent with the elbows backward until the forearm is perpendiclar to the bar. Mu ted refers to a perfromed with control, in which the elbows move backwards until they are perpendicular to the bar.
Impossible and variants:
impossible | reverse cti assisted | cti assisted | cti |
2 | 1 | 2 | 5 |
N.b. As for all the elements, the scores will suffer serious penalties in the face of imperfect technique.
Oap:
Rings | Bar prone grip | Bar neutral grip |
1,5 | 2,5 | 2 |
N.b. We remind that the basic executive parameter is the full closing of the pulling arm. The body must be tense with the non-pulling arm along the hip throughout the movement.
Rings:
For the scores of every passage from handstand, planche and swallow, please refer to the abovementioned tables, here only the unique elements and passages of the rings are listed:
oap | cross | cross v sit | lateral cross | inverted cross | victorian
1,5 | 2 | 3 | 2,5 | 3 | 5 |
N.b. As for the bar related ones, the OAP must be meant technically perfect (body tense, non-pulling arm straight along the hip, full closing of the pulling arm). The combined passages such as nakayama, etc. will be evaluated as the rest of the skills, that is with bonus according to the nature and difficulty of the passages, since some elements have a higher value than the gymnastic code.
Nakayama: back lever raising in cross will be counted as a back lever + a cross + combination bonus depending on the cleanliness of the movement.
For any other movement not separable in the different isometries with the add of the combination, please refer to the value in the section “rings” of the scores code. For example, the azaryan has a 4 points value (value in decimals x 10), same method for its variants, for the kippe back and forth.
Freestyle:
Due to the variable nature of the freestyle elements, it was decided to make a split: firm grip movements (a part of the body is always in contact with the bar(parallel bars), which most of the time are passages or connections not to interrupt the performance fluidity, and movements with detachment (no part of the body is in contact with the bar).
Inherent to this, there are 4 sub-categories with constant scores within a specific variable, which identify: movements called “simil granvolte”, in which the whole body rotates around the bar with the executive constraint that it does not have to be in contact with the bar, except for the limbs involved in the grip (legs or hands); movements which bring to a rotation around the bar in which most body parts may be in contact; all the movements the athlete uses to switch bar (in all their variants), and all the movements of raising to the bar (gymnastic kippe, muscle-up freestyle variants, dorsal raising, etc.).
Any choreographic additions to the existing elements like rhythm walks and similar, may provide a bonus from 0,1 to 0,2. Changing the hand in the grip on the fly during the skill or during the swing, without compromising fluidity (e.g. reversing the grip after a 360) counts an additional bonus of 0,2 points. We remind that, according to the regulations in page 1, as for the dynamic and the static, combined movements will provide a bonus from 0,1 to 0,5 (e.g. 10 combined elements in a row will provide a bonus from 1 to 5, depending on the difficulty of the connection).
MACRO CATEGORIES: firm grip movements and with detachment.
Movements sub-categories:
Raising movements | 0,1 – 0,4 |
Movements around the bar | 0,2-0,4 |
Movements around the bar simil granvolte | 0,3-1 |
Switching bar movements | 0,3 – 2 |
Firm grip category, frequent movements:
Abs round/variants | ventral round | over the bar | over the bar 360 |
0,2 | 0,3 | 0,5 | 1,5 |
Assisted maltese straddle/full | front neck | Reverse neck | inverted pulls/slow |
1,25/1,75 | 0,4 | 0,6 | 0,5 a pulls+ |
Down to the bar 0,3
N.b. Abs round stands for the standard gymnastic raise starting from hanging at the bar. For the variants, see above “rounds around the bar”. Ventral rounds means the opposite movement, returning to the starting point. The “over the bar” means every momentum passage in which the whole body passes over the bar and arrives to the other side. In the “360” variant the focus is on the shoulder to circle the whole body over the bar and back at least with the legs to the starting side. The assisted swallow is the variant in which the forearms rest on the bar. The front and dorsal grips with neck involve the exclusive use of it to hold all the body’s weight.. The iverted pulls are a hefesto variant in which the athlete hanging with his arms supinate in grip with his hands in contact, pulls until he touches the bar with his vertebrae. The “down to the bar” means to launche the legs beyond the bar up to be seated and fall backwards (connection skilll or output).
Movements with detachment:
This category includes all the variants of 360 and the skills with no contact.
360 glute rest | 360 swing | 360 on the bar | 540 swing | 360 standing at the bar | 360 cubital grip(both shoulders dislocated) |
0,2 | 0,5 | 0,7 | 3 | 1,5 | 2 |
N.b. In the first variant, during the round, the athete’s glutes rest on the bar. The second one is a 360 after one swing. The third one, starting from over the bar in support. In the fifth one, before the rotation only the feet touch the ground. In the sixth one both shoulders must be dislocated while performing. The one arm 360 variant is 2 points.
Additional movements with detachment
Basic Dynamic | entrance back lever + re-grab | Kippe+sneak/sneak in v sit |
0,2 – 0,4 | 2,5 | 2/3 |
N.b. The basic dynamic include every dynamic detachment aimed only to perform hands clap or connection passages. The entrance in back + re-grab consists, by hanging,in entering with the legs between the arms as if to go for a back lever, swinging and hanging again at the bar. The same element without detaching the hands and reaching the L-sit is the next element of 3 points.
Example: evaluation of a freestyle mini set; an athlete hangs at the bar and performs a gymnastic kippe to raise in support; now he performs a 360 over the bar, raises soon with an abs round, holds the assisted maltese, passes to the front lever, hooks with his neck, performs a “over the bar 360”+down the bar+isometric back lever, he moves to one arm back lever and then he goes down the bar. If the whole set is performed perfectly, without any penalty, the athlete will obtain the scores below: 0,7(for the 360)+ 1,25 (assisted maltese straddle)+ 1 (front)+0,4 (neck)+1,5 (over 360)+ 0,2 (down the bar)+0,5 (back lever)+ 1 (oabl). In addition to these scores 0,8 (having combined 8 skills),+ connections 0,1 for the gymnastic raise, 0,2 for the abdominal round, + additional bonus walks/choreography. In the case he does not perform any walk and the judges do not consider the choreography worthy of bonus (unlike since here is perfect, but it is only an example), this mini set would provide 7,65 points.
Ballast movements:
Ballasted movements will provide a variable bonusboth depending on the percentage of the ballast compared to the own body’s weight, both on the position of the same, and both according to the difficulty of the exercise in an exponential range. The higher is the value of the starting skill, more bonus will be give to the use of ballast. Any ballast to be used during the sets must be previously declared to the judges.
Exit movements:
The exit movements are the final movements with which the athlete leaves the bar, parallel bars or scenic item of a certain difficulty.
backflip afterswing fw | backflip standing parallels/bar | backflip seated | backflip swing bw | backflip with twist |
1 | 1,2-2,5 | 2,5 | 2,5 | 3 |
N.b. The first one is the standard gymnastic exit, the third one is performed seated on the bar, pushing with the thighs.
Any alternative exit or freestyle movement on the ground to be previously communicated to the judges.
- Isometric holds will be counted when the body stays still. If the hold will continue to fall without standstill it will be not considered valid. The count will start from the moment when the body stops in position and must be kept for a minimum of 2 seconds.
- To be validated the isometric hold will have to be stopped from a minimum of 2 seconds to a maximum of 3 seconds, a longer duration will not gain an increase of the score.
- For the less experienced, here below there is a brief guide to understand technique and polish of the main known elements:
Planche (isometric): arms straight, scapular depression and elevation, pelvis retroversion, legs straight, toes tense; if performed on the rings a rotation of the hands is required. No contact between ropes and body.
Single-limb Planche: performed with no lateral rolling, body tense, supporting arm straight, hips at the same height..
OAP: from dead hang (completely detached from the ground or any structure that can facilitate the movement), at first arm outstretched. Reach the complete closure of the hand on the corresponding shoulder. The closing level is used as a parameter to evaluate the pull-up.
Front lever (isometric): arms straight, scapular depression, pelvis retroversion, legs straight, toes tense;
Single limb Front lever: performed with the pulling arm straight and the body in line with no lateral rolling.
German hang/Hefesto: from dead hang, firstly with arms straight; the movement is to be considered complete when the pushing phase ends and you arrive in almost seated position on the bar.
TED: shoulders behind the line of the hands. Complete the movement (in the case of descent) until reaching an abutting position. Preferably body not squared (open hips);
Handstand: alignment generally achieved by opening the shoulders and pelvis retroversion. Legs and toes stretched. The movements of mono-arm handstand must be performed with straight arm. The movements of Mexican handstand (hollowback) must be performed at shoulders width (otherwise the participant’s health may be compromised);
Human Flag: the movement seen from the side must be symmetrical. The torso turned upwards (belly up) or the arched line will be considered mistakes. Penalty in case of bent upper limbs. Lateral swing will be allowed only if you will link flag variants.
Push-up/pull-up of one element: full closure of the movements, taking into account all the precautions of the involved element. The push-up/pull-up referring to a static can be considered complete when the hips are in line with the hands.
Elements which combine two movements: they must refer to all the precautions described in the movements in question.
Example: raise from Planche to Handstand with polish and technique. It must be performed taking into account both the requirements for Planche and Handstand.
Muscle-up: surge will be allowed. The slow version will have a higher score. Muscle-up wide and TEDMU will be scored higher. Other variants will be judged on-spot, if not known will have to be submitted before.
Victorian: arms to an angle of 60-45° than the body. Shoulders, hands, hips and the remaining body parts must be in line at a height between the top and the bottom of the ring (in performed on the rings), or at the height of the parallels if performed at the parallels or as close as possible to the bar if at the bar.
Swallow: the arms must be open at circa 45°. the body must be in line, upper back in protraction or neutral. The performance at the parallels with helpers holding the supports is to be considered with a less value than the performance with no help. Except for the variant on the ground, in all the other supports the body must be held at the approximately height of the hands.
Raises from swallow: to be considered as such, the starting position of swallow above mentioned must be performed.
Square in general: L-sit: will be penalised: back imbalance, bent arms and legs not parallel to the floor.
V-sit and Manna: penalties for bent arms and extreme back imbalance. Any new element will be evaluated at the discretion of the jury, taking into account a creativity bonus.
The new elements shall be submitted or named to the judges within 2 days by the exhibition.
- Scenic appearance and awesomeness of the connections and sets:
- Ant type of walk or themes of scenic character;
- NB: scenography as the walks, performed in transition between movements, will have to be followed by some holds to be evaluated.
The use of several variants of the same skill in a set will be evaluated with a higher score than a lack of variants.
Mastery of a complete repertoire.
it will be rewarded who will own a complete repertoire, that is:
elements of both pull and push, isometric and dynamic, etc.
ATTENTION:
Long pauses, facilitations, over-use of the walk may penalise the score of the set.
